I recently received a letter from Chase, they changed my annual interest rate to 29.44% and they also closed my account!! I always paid my bill on time, and always paid more than my minimum payment. When I called Chase, they could not give me any reasonable explanations for doing this. I feel like I've being robbed my Chase bank! When is this going to stop? Can anything be done? Can this be investigated?

I roughly have the same situation, only mine differs that I had moved from Florida to NYC, and in the transition I didn’t receive some chase mail. I fought their website to enter the correct address for my cc to be sent to NYC while mortgage & home equity remain Florida. The ‘official’ change was made in early November; Chase stated they sent me the notification in the end of Nov. I have always paid my credit card on time and always above the minimum, which was currently down to $155/month. I have been paying $340 for the longest time, and took it down to $300 each month for the last 8 months. My last invoice claimed I was late and I owed $448, late payment fee with an additional $10 ‘service fee’ and my new minimum was $374. Same story when speaking to the representatives, who were curt, aggressive and dismissive, even when asking how can they send out only one notification when something will impact a personal account to such a degree. Chase did the same lack of notification thing with my home mortgage in Feb 08. I had a gut feeling to be worried about this bank/cc company when it merged with Bank One/First USA who was notorious for underhanded dealings. The lawyers usually take the bulk of any settlement, but I hope it sends a message to Congress and the Administration that this is what the $25,000,000,000.00 Billion of OUR Taxpayers bailout money to Chase is getting us. People who are still able or on the cusp in their ability to make payment on their debit are getting absolutely raped by the very institution we are bailing out.

This is the fear (all banks jumping in and causing an implosion with credit card holders) that many of us have. That's why the ChangeInTerms site is fighting Chase as hard as we can. I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. Please keep us posted.

In November I was advised that in order to keep my promotional % of 3.99 and 4.99, I would be charged a $10 service charge per month and my monthly minimum payment could increase from 2% to up to 5%. When I took advantage of these promotional rates I actually purchased an automobile thinking that the payments would follow what I had been promised by Chase. In January I was advised that not only would I have the $10 service charge, but my monthly payment of 2% would increase to 5%, from $330 to $820. I called the company and was told this was due to financial problems and there was no negotiating at all. Either play their game or close the account. This does not feel like fair business practices at all.

I have paid one month of the increased payment but am thinking of transferring the balance to another card and paying approximately $500 (3% of the amount) in finance charges. I have also heard that CITI Bank is doing the same thing. I'm afraid to do anything since there seems to be no way to actually sign up for something without the threat of it changing at the banks' whims. Please include me in any class action suit against Chase and also look into whether they can advertise a promotional rate and change the terms that prevailed at the time of the promotion. The banks certainly have found a loophole but I hope you can close it for present and future credit users.

I should not be penalized for buying with credit as long as I live up to my end of the bargain, which I have done.

The complaint has been filed...

http://www.gslawny.com/files/chase_credit_card_complaint.pdf

It is a good start with a class definition which probably covers many of affected people, though surely I think there are an additional classes of people with damages who (1) can't pay the higher minimum payment and default, (2) unnecessarily payoff the balance and now have less favorable terms, (3) wanted to outright opt-out but were denied.

Hopefully more attorneys will join the action in the next few months and represent these other potential classes.
